Curricula & Degree Programs

The PLM curricula, from the licensure programs to minimum course requirements, are based on the prescribed curriculum of the Commission on Higher Education, but the PLM education system exercises full autonomy to alter or enhance its own curricula to maintain the primacy of its excellence.

The various colleges offer degree programs based on the curricula proposed by the PLM faculty. Usually, the programs require the teaching of the courses of study by leaders in the business or industry and the conduct of actual field exposure. The participative involvement of practitioners in the formulation of the courses of study is reflected in the skills-oriented, community-directed and value-driven curricular programs of PLM. In 2004, the University's Medium-Term Development Plan mainstreamed into the PLM education system some innovative programs and best practices as articulated in the academic programs that are market-based and more responsive to the industry needs under an open global economy set-up. This direction enhanced even more PLM's powerful name and brand equity as a leading scholars' university, whose excellence the CHED has acknowledged as "beyond reproach and a class by itself." In due recognition, the finest and cutting-edge companies companies look at PLM graduates as a regular top preference since the last decade in their personnel hiring.

The General Education curriculum
During the first year of college work, scholars at the undergraduate level receive a general education program from the College of Liberal Arts. All freshmen have enrolled in a common program of preparatory courses during their first year prior to enrolling in their choice of academic degree the following year. On 15 April 2005, the 68-unit PLM General Education Program (GEP) was revised to consist of English, Filipino, Social Sciences and Humanities, Philosophy and Ethics, Sciences, Mathematics, and Personal Financial Management. Other management courses have also been integrated with emphasis on ethics to ensure that PLM graduates are steep with sound values and would adhere to the highest ethical standards expected of refined professionals in their chosen careers.

The set-up where the freshmen are not conferred their degree preferences upon their admission, started in SY 2005-2006, is now repealed and was last applied to those admitted in SY 2008-2009. Starting SY 2009-2010, the regular set-up where freshmen are assigned their course choices was restored. The general education curriculum as a form of liberating education remains in force, substantially in the fashion prior to 2005.

National Service Training Program
The students are also required to attend four Physical Education classes, and a choice between the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) under the Department of Military Science & Tactics (DMST) and the Civil Welfare Training Service (CWTS) under the National Service Training Program (NSTP). The PLM ROTC Unit has been consistently hailed by the National Capital Region-Regional Community Defense Group as one of the most outstanding ROTC units in the Philippines.
