Message from the Alumni President

Report on Alumni General Membership Assembly, 27 February 2010

The PLMAAI Alumni Annual General Assembly, held on 27 February 2010 at the PLM University Activity Center (UAC), was attended by 191 new members, guests and visitors from different college, batch and other alumni associations.

Acting University President Atty. Rafaelito Garayblas who represented Mayor Alfredo Lim, led PLM senior officials in welcoming the alumni to PLM. Acting EVP Atty. Patrick Mariano, University Secretary Dr. Anchela Uy-Biag, PLM CUES Director Dr. Ellen Galvez, Dean Nonalyn Gesalan of the College of Accountancy & Economics, and Dean Nilo Capangpangan of the College of Nursing also attended the annual alumni assembly. Dean Gemma Duffy of the College of Mass Communication, Dean Dennis Diano of the College of Engineering & Technology, Director Garry Erwin De Gracia of the PLM IT Center, and Ms. Erlinda Cayao, president of the PLM Faculty Association, were also in attendance.

Eight (8) members of PLMAAI board of trustees led by Dean Felix Aspiras of the Graduate School of Engineering and eight (8) alumni association presidents, including the Pamantasan Medical Graduates Association, Inc. and the Maragtas ROTC Alumni Association, attended the annual event. Engr. Raul Consunji, former dean of the College of Engineering & Technology, was also a special guest.

It was a historic and memorable one for the alumni, their friends and guests since the alumni association was reorganized in October 2007. Trustee Roberto D. Del Rosario welcomed the alumni in behalf of the Association, while Bishop Reuben Abante of Lighthouse Bible Baptist Church & Ministry offered the thanksgiving prayer. Nearly half of those in attendance were from recent batches of the 80s and 90s, with the College of Engineering & Technology sending the largest contingent of alumni.

Atty. Garayblas administered the oath-taking of the new members of the Association, led by the trustees present.

PLM’s in-house talents led by the PLM Student Chorale Society, Hiyas ng Maynilad, Iskolars Dance, Inc., and the Mabuhay Lyre & Marching Band under Ms. Susan Mercado of the President’s Committee on Arts & Culture (PCAC) and OIC-Dean Marlon Miguel of the Office of Student Development & Services (OSDS) performed entertainment numbers to the delight of the audience.

The Alumni Assembly was organized with the cooperation and support from various segments of the alumni community, mostly from resident alumni and other alumni groups. The Physical Development & Special Projects Office (PDSPO) under Engr. Rolando Marasigan provided the physical arrangements and security during the event.

Attendance was conspicuously below expectation, principally due to the cancellation of the general election.

The assembly, however, drew presidents from different alumni associations who stayed behind and offered their support and cooperation to the PLMAAI on its various programs for the PLM community. They committed to support and participate actively in the February 2011 general election for the new board of trustees and officers of the association.

Before he left, Atty. Garayblas ordered the completion of the Alumni Office at the 3rd floor of Gusaling Villegas where PLMAAI will hold office. It was well worth the effort of organizing the February 27 Alumni General Assembly after all, despite last minute changes in the program.

To those who helped organize and supported the Alumni Assembly, the PLMAAI extends its gratitude and thank you.

Jesus Trinos, Jr.
President

Call for Nomination for the PLMAAI Elections by the Alumni President

(Emailed message for all alumni to show unity on the hallowed grounds of their alma mater)
23 December 2009

Dear fellow alumni,

On 27 February 2010, the PLMAAI, your alumni association, will hold its first General Membership Meeting to elect the new members of the Board of Trustees, as provided for by the Constitution and By-laws. It may interest you to know that the current board of trustees and officers are serving as interim trustees and officers, and our term expires in February 2010.

For this purpose, an Election Committee chaired by Dr. Flordeliza Ferrer, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts, Science & Education, was organized and met last 27 November 2009 to draft the rules and manner of electing the next board of trustees. Here are the salient features of the 2010 election:

Election will be by representation, as provided for by a board resolution. This process ensures maximum representation from as many sectors of the alumni community (i.e., college, batch, special interest alumni groups).  Overseas alumni are not eligible for election to the board of trustees for practical reason. However, recognized overseas alumni associations or alumni groups are allowed to vote, through their representatives.

For the 2010 election, we are dispensing with the requirement that a member in "good standing" must have paid his/her admission and annual dues to be qualified to run for office and/or to vote. It is sufficient that he or she attends and participates in alumni activities.

Each college at PLM will nominate two (2) alumni representatives; each recognized alumni association, alumni group or special interest alumni group are likewise allowed to nominate two (2) representatives. Each recognized overseas alumni association and other alumni group is also allowed to nominate two (2) representatives. A representative can only be nominated once.

All college/batch associations, alumni groups and/or special interest alumni groups local or overseas, must register with the Election Committee  for proper accreditation and recognition. The following are recognized alumni association, alumni group or special interest alumni groups:
                    1. PLM Scholars Foundation, Inc. (PLMSFI)
                    2. Batch '68 Development Foundation, Inc.
                    3. Pamantasan Medical Graduates Association, Inc. (PMGAI)
                    4. Academic Employees' Association of PLM
                    5. PLM College of Accountancy & Economics Alumni Association
                    6. PLM College of Nursing Alumni Association, Inc.

The following are recognized overseas alumni association or special interest alumni groups:
                    1. PLM Alumni Association - Canada
                    2. PLM Association of Alumni & Friends - Australia
                    3. PLM Alumni Association - North America
                    4. PLM Alumni Group from California

There may be other alumni groups interested to participate that we missed, they are enjoined to register with the Election Committee. Online registration  and nomination of representatives maybe made to facilitate the process. Please direct all online registrations to: Dr. Flordeliza Ferrer: gsase_plm@yahoo.com. Dr. Ferrer may also be reached at her office at G/F, Gusaling Atienza, PLM campus in Intramuros. She is the incumbent Dean of the Graduate School of Arts, Sciences and Education.

All nominated representatives will constitute the Electoral College and will elect among themselves the 15-man board of trustees who, in turn, will elect the folowing officers:

                    1. President
                    2. Vice President
                    3. Secretary
                    4. Asst. Secretary
                    5. Treasurer
                    6. Asst. Treasurer

All members of the Electoral College are candidates for Trustee, except members representing overseas alumni groups who can only vote (This intends to allow overseas alumni groups participation in the process of electing the candidates; alumni representatives cannot be voted as Trustee, for the simple reason that they are not in the Philippines and cannot perform their duties; Only the overseas representatives may vote online.).

The Chair of the Election Committee will convene the Electoral College and preside over the election of the 15-man board of trustees and the election of officers. She will then give the result to the PLMAAI Secretary or Asst. Secretary who will make the formal announcement.

The PLMAAI  General Membership Meeting and election will be held at the PLM Pride Hall and/or the University Activity Center.

Let us make this event an opportunity not only to elect our next leaders, but also to reunite, rekindle friendship, strengthen our ties and take pride in being PLM graduates. Where else to celebrate unity than on the grounds of PLM?

The PLM education is one of the best things that happened to all of us. Going back to our alma mater to see how far it has gone is always a source of pride and inspiration. Let us meet on 27 February 2010 to celebrate and together, chart the future of the PLM alumni community.

May I end this advisory by bringing to all of you my warm thoughts and best wishes for a wonderful holiday. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Jess B. Trinos Jr.

CET@40: Sustaining the Legacy of Excellence in Technology

(Message on the occasion of the 40th [Ruby] Foundation Anniversary of the College of Engineering & Technology, 01-04 Dec 09)

23 November 2009

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila Alumni Association, Inc. (PLMAAI) extends its warmest congratulations and best wishes to the faculty, officers and members of the College of Engineering and Technology (CET) on the occasion of your 40th Ruby anniversary celebration.

It is always a golden opportunity for CET graduates to gather together on the grounds of PLM to strengthen ties, rekindle friendship and take pride in being PLM graduates. Your PLM education is one of the best things that happened to all of you, and going back to your alma mater to see how far it has gone since forty years ago is a source of pride and inspiration.

Your theme, “Sustaining the Legacy of Excellence in Technology” cannot be more relevant than today, as we extol the important role of PLM education in engineering and technology, and in producing responsible engineers imbued with technical, moral and social conscience. It is your role in turn, to sustain and carry on this legacy in your respective professions and businesses and find ways to help your alma mater improve and develop the teaching process through quality instruction and greater involvement in research in science and technology.

PLM today ranks as among the top 5 universities in the country, it is regarded in high esteem by the academic and business communities as well. We encourage you to live up to this reputation and improve on this good image by living exemplary lives. A university is best known by its faculty and its graduates. Let us live up to the highest standard of PLM education.

I understand that the College of Engineering and Technology Alumni Association is being formed by CET alumni. This is a big step in forging unity and solidarity among engineering graduates, and in engaging the alma mater in a constructive and productive manner. It is indeed timely that an alumni association is organized for the interest of PLM and its alumni.

The entire PLM alumni community wish you success and best wishes in all your programs and activities. Mabuhay ang College of Engineering and Technology! Mabuhay ang PLM!

Engr. Jesus B. Trinos Jr.
President, PLM Alumni Association, Inc.

02 October 2009

In the aftermath of Ondoy's disaster, we appeal to our generous PLM alumni and friends who have extra cash and goods to spare, to send their cash donation to:
PLM Scholars Foundation, Inc.
Banco De Oro C/A# 00438017412
Metropolitan Avenue Branch
Makati City

and goods to:
PLM Alumni Association, Inc.
Pres. Ramon Magsaysay Entrepreneurial Center (PRMEC)
PLM Campus

I will coordinate with PLM officials on the method of relief operations for victims of typhoon Ondoy. I understand they are converting the University Activity Center into a relief operations center.

PLM has canceled the activities of Pres. Adel Tamano's birthday which is today, and instead will divert all efforts at extending help to typhoon victims. We are likewise aware that other PLM alumni and employees are likewise victims themselves, and we want to extend whatever assistance we can to alleviate their sufferings.

With this, I would like to call on the PLM alumni community and friends to spare anything they can to help our fellow Filipinos and fellow alumni who are in need of help at this time.

We would appreciate for all to spread the call for help. I can be reached at: +63916-340-2321, +63908-7777-666 or +63922-889-3113.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Jess Trinos, Jr.
President

Note:
Through the courtesy of the Foundation President, Herminio Orbe, the PLMAAI entered into an agreement with PLMSFI to have all private cash donations and contributions be coursed through the latter's BDO account to facilitate the relief efforts needed by our fellow citizens at these trying times.
