The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila extends its deepest condolences to the family of former Manila Mayor Alfredo “Fred” Lim, who passed away on August 8 due to COVID-19. He was 90 years old.

Apart from serving the country as a lawyer, policeman, director of the National Bureau of Investigation, Secretary of Interior and Local Government, and senator, Mayor Lim consistently supported the University during his four terms leading the City of Manila from 1992 to 1998 and in 2007 to 2013. He would consistently attend major events within campus grounds, hoping to inspire students and share some insights on effective leadership.

Mayor Lim made sure that the University will be led by capable officials through his appointees to the Board of Regents.

Mayor Lim was a champion of equal access to education, having also established the City College of Manila (now Universidad de Manila) in 1995 to complement PLM. Both schools offer tuition-free education well ahead of the passage of a national law making college education free in state-run institutions.

PLM thanks Mayor Lim for his contributions to the development of the University. Our sincerest condolences to the bereaved.
